Andre Derain

Andre Derain (1880-1954), a Parisian, intended to become an engineer before deciding to study art at the Julian Academy. Sharing a studio with Vlaminck, and a friend of Manet, Braque and Picasso, Derain was fascinated by line and colour. He worked as a theatrical set designer, and as a wood engraver for book illustrations. His still lifes, landscapes and portraits were rarely exhibited in his lifetime: he became a solitary man and most of his fame came after his death.
