Roland Hipkins (1894-1951) trained at the Royal College of Art before migrating to New Zealand in 1922, settling in Napier where he helped form the Napier Society of Arts and Crafts. In 1929 he moved to Wellington, becoming in time lecturer in art and craft at the Teachers' Training College where he remained for his working life. He influenced a generation of teachers who in turn worked with school children to interest them in art relating to their own surroundings.
