William Hodges (1744–97), Captain Cook’s official artist on the second voyage to the Pacific (1772–74). Hodges painted some superb scenes in oils of his visit to New Zealand on his return to England. Many of his sketches and topographical paintings became the engravings that illustrated the published editions of James Cook’s Journals.
