Franz Marc (1880-1916) was born in Munich, but studied theology before entering the Munich Art Academy in 1900. He visited Paris in 1903, making a second trip in 1907 during which he first saw works by Van Gogh. Meeting Macke and Kandinsky in 1910, he became a member if the Blaue Reiter and showed in the first exhibition. For a time Marc painted mostly animals, in an abstractionist form, though he was experimenting with landscapes at the time of his battlefield death in 1916.
