Michelagniolo di Lodovico di Lionardo di Buonarroti Simone (Michelangelo Buonarroti) (1475-1564) was born in Tuscany and began his art studies in the workshop of the Ghirlandaio brothers. Michelangelo was gifted not only as a painter, but also as a sculptor, an engineer, and architect, and a poet, his own preference being sculpture. He believed that the more painting resembled sculpture the better it was. By the time he was 15, he was working for the Medici family. His greatest painting, the decoration of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, was painted single-handedly between 1508 and 1512. In 1537 Michelangelo began The Last Judgement fresco on the Chapel wall, and he continued working until the end of his life.
