Trevor Moffitt (1936 - 2006) was born in Gore and trained at both the Canterbury University School of Art, and the Auckland Teacher's Training College before teaching art in Invercargill in the early 1960s. He then moved to Timaru, where, over a period of years, he painted a series of works based on the nineteenth century's legendary sheepstealer James McKenzie. His later painting life was spent in Canterbury.
