Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) was the only female French Impressionist, studying from 1862 to 1868 under Corot at a time when the idea of art as a career for women was quite alien. In 1874 she married Edouard Manet's brother Eugene; the influence of brother- and sister-in-law on each other was marked. Morisot worked in pastel, oil, and watercolour, and exhibited in many official Salons.
