John Pule (1962- ) was born in Niue, a small nation in the Pacific. John moved with his family to Auckland, New Zealand at the age of two. A well-known writer with two novels and several volumes of poetry in print Pule took up painting in 1987 with the encouragement of Tony Fomision. Mythology and history are of specific interest to John as he weaves fish, people and birdlike creatures into a very personal response to the colonisation of the Pacific. While his painting is Pacific in subject and style he collects ideas and motifs voraciously and incorporates all into a rich network of interlacing imagery that, through its intimacy, touches on a more universal humanity. New Zealand Fine Prints are delighted to stock Pule's screenprint "Small Bird" - this edition is the first time the artist has used the screenprinting process to produce prints.
