Joseph Stella (1880-1946) was born in Italy and studied first as a doctor before turning to painting. He came to New York in 1900, working at the New York School of Art before starting a career as an illustrator. He returned to Italy in 1909, coming into contact with the Italian Futurists, who greatly influenced him: after he went back to the USA he exhibited in 1913 as the only American Futurist. Prints of Stella’s paintings depict the fast pace and movement of the American way of life.
