Antique Print

Image size in millimetres: 230 x 150

Engraved by F Engleheart from a painting by British History & portrait painter William Hilton.  Circa 1880 steel engraving.  In reasonable condition for its age with minor foxing.  Published in London by James S Virtue.

The subject of this picture is to be found in Spenser's 'Faery Queen' book Vi canto 8. Serena wanders into a wild desert and is captured by the locals whose custom is to 'devour all strangers' and offer their blood in sacrifice to their Gods.  Sir Calepine,  Serena's own true knight who has been asleep in the forest nearby,  hears the pre sacrifice commotion and rescues her just in the nick of time!
