This is a contemporary New Zealand landscape, the border between the cultivated and the wilder native plants demarcated by a classic white wooden picket fence. The unseen gardener has abandoned their wheel barrow, have they gone for a swim or a game of tennis? The title perhaps references the infamous painting “The Pleasure Garden” by Frances Hodgkins, which was initially rejected by the Christchurch Art Gallery as being too avant garde.
