Tony writes about this late 2019 print, “this coastal niche has inspired many of my artworks. I captured this scene on one of my first visits to Whangapoua many years ago and it has always summed up in a simple way the experience of being there – stoked to have finally interpreted it into print!” Whangapoua Beach is a 1500m long sandy swimming beach bookended by Motuto and Te Rehutae Points, located on the Coromandel Peninsula on the North Island of NZ. In this early morning scene a surfer catches the first waves of the day as the sun slowly rises, Tony pays particular attention to the clearing clouds and interplay of light and shadow effects on the water to create the sense of this time of the day out on a surf board.
