Bethells Beach has been a favourite subject for many NZ painters, and arguably Don Binney was one of the first artists to popularise this subject in his modernist realism landscape painting “Pastoral Te Henga”. The hovering bird over a flowing landscape became a recurring motif in Binney’s paintings, the inclusion of the sheep in “Pastoral Te Henga” was not repeated in later works.
