A striking figurative work from New Zealand artist Michael Smither. In Michael’s own words ‘I’ve always enjoyed the way breasts float like islands in the bath. Where I got into trouble for this painting was the accurate rendering of the reflection of a small window. Until that time Bonnard wasn’t too far away. But suddenly there was a slicing of flesh. I had two options. To leave it alone and recognise the horror of St Agatha’s martydom torture & death, or grow little palm trees around the nipples. But there is no going back once the subconscious has spoken’.
