This portrait is of Irishman Johnny Johnston who arrived on the shores of Kororareka, New Zealand in 1827 from NSW, Australia. He opened the well known hotel, The Duke of Marlborough after gaining the country's first official liquor license. Johnny also built a good relationship with local Maori, learning te reo and helping to translate the Treaty of Waitangi.
