The distinctive red building on the railway line at Cass between Canterbury and the West coast has long been a popular subject for New Zealand artists.  In the 1930’s a number of artists began painting the Canterbury High Country, most famously Rita Angus and her landscape painting of the railway station at Cass also notable artists Leo Bensemann, Louise Henderson, Rata Lovell-Smith and Bill Sutton.
