Erewhon is one of several famous high country stations in the foothills of the Southern Alps. Erewhon is named after the book written by Samuel Butler in 1872. Butler spent a successful few years as a sheep farmer and land speculator in this part of New Zealand before returning to England. This print of a painting by Ernest Papps shows sheep being brought down from the tops in Autumn to spend the winter in the relative hospitality of the river flats.
