Allan creates a sense of space and serenity in his painting through leaving out uneccessary imagery to create a stripped back, more essential, picture. Hamish’s artworks often reference vernacular NZ architecture, in this case he paints a Holden Kingswood car parked outside an art deco fish and chip shop. The NZ landscape is representational rather than being a specific place, his artistic interest lies in depicting the relationship between the NZ landscape and human interventional rather than reproducing an exact record of a particular location.
