Update: This edition has now sold out. This Shane Hansen print is based on a Maori proverb "korihi ake nga manu, takiri mai te ata, ka ao, ka oa, ka awatea!, tihei mauri ora" which translates as "the birds call, the day begins, and I am alive". Screenprinted by hand onto 300gsm fabriano stock the drops are overglossed with shimmer ink. The Koru design is a traditional motif in Maori art, the use of the stylised koru shaped droplets references the modernist artist Gordon Walters and Te Karanga Pitoitio is also influenced by Asian art forms such as Chinese painting and the pillar shaped Japanese woodblock prints of a similar long and narrow design. Hansen is showing us how to produce strikingly beautiful images that could only have been created in the cultural mixing bowl of contemporary Aotearoa. This is art that is uniquely NZ's own, through printmakers like Shane Hansen we are finding our own distinct visual style on the world art scene.
