This black and white print is from a series that begun by the artist back in 1970. During Smither’s tenure as the Frances Hodgkins fellow at Otago University Rita Angus died. Smither writes “I decided to take the central Otago landscape we both enjoyed and introduce it into the cruciform shape as a memorial to her. I made many drawings and at an early stage decided to extend the idea into a series of 12, relating to the Catholic tradition of the Stations of the Cross.” This 2014 edition of prints came about when some of his early drawings re-surfaced and were returned to Smither for restoration. Smither decided to turn them into screenprints on good paper (artistico fabriano to be exact).
