Moeraki Boulders by John Scott

The mysterious spherical boulders at Moeraki captured the imagination of Maori and Pakeha alike.  This early painting by John Scott would have been painted to show these curiousities to a wider audience - and to a modern eye it also captures the sense of Victorian era wonderment that nature had created such marvels and then seemingly casually arranged them like marbles strewn along an otherwise ordinary beach on the east coast of the South Island.
