Update: This print has now sold out. Rita Angus painted A Goddess of Mercy as a tribute to her sister Edna, who died suddenly in 1940. The pattern of the goddess's skirt comes from one of Edna's favourite outfits. Rita Angus' goddess paintings celebrate a mystical female world, which Angus presents as an alternative to the destructive male culture of wartime (it was painted 1945 - 47). Angus marries Eastern and Western symbolism in this work. The young woman recalls the figure of the Virgin Mary in Christian art. The painting's title on the other hand evokes the Buddhist divinity Kuan Yin, who represents mercy and compassion. Angus was deeply drawn to Buddhism at this time.
This print of A Goddess of Mercy by Rita Angus was created using the Giclee printing process which uses a very sophisticated digital printer to deliver a fine stream of ink onto archival paper. The resulting print has extremely fine colour fidelity and exceptional detail that is suitable for museum and gallery display. This large print is absolutely stunning - it is such a fantastic print that our catalogue manager (who has a lot of prints to choose from!) has this one at home.
