New Zealand's only North Island commercial ski areas are Whakapapa and Turoa on respectively the northwestern and southwestern slopes of Mt Ruapehu. The volcanic mountains Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe (seen here in the background) and Tongariro were gifted to the people of New Zealand by Ngati Tuwharetoa in 1887 and formed the nucleus of New Zealand's first national park - Tongariro National Park. Commercial ski-ing began in Tongariro National Park in the 1920s with equipment hire starting at one pound per day. With the construction of the Chateau Tongariro completed in 1929 solving the accommodation crisis near the mountain the NZ Tourism Department commissioned Marcus King (1891 - 1983) to design this poster.
